Verbal recall and working memory dip measurably during the menopause transition for many women, and for most it improves again afterwards.

"Fifteen years in the job and I lost a word in a board meeting. I spiralled for four hours. The fog lasted a second; the spiral lasted the afternoon."

Practical scaffolding

  • Write your three points before any meeting that matters
  • Sleep is the biggest modifiable input to cognition — fix nights first
  • Say 'the word's gone, give me a second' out loud; it defuses it
